Among those robust materials, mesoporous silicas have become very popular since they were proposed as drug delivery systems for the first time back in 2001 by the Vallet-Regí lab (Vallet-Regí et al. 2001).
In general, mesoporous silica materials fulfill all the requirements for a material to be employed as a drug delivery system:
The possible organic functionalization of mesoporous silicas through an easy and quick process, as commented on in Chapter 1 of this book, brings the possibility of closing the pore entrances with diverse functionalities.
In addition to all these requirements, mesoporous silica materials are very popu- lar as drug delivery systems because they are very easy to produce, as commented on in the previous chapter of this book, and their pore architecture can be easily tuned by the proper selection of the surfactant template.
Another important characteristic of mesoporous silicas is that they are thermally and chemically stable, which permits carrying out several chemical reactions on their surface.
